Green marks come from metal salts — usually copper — reacting with skin moisture or cosmetics. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, mostly copper, so under the right conditions a faint green tint is chemically normal.
The good news: it is preventable. Rhodium or palladium barrier layers, proper e-coating, and advising customers to remove jewelry before swimming or applying lotion all dramatically reduce occurrence.
